Alibaba introduced its next-generation Zhenwu V900 AI accelerator at the Apsara Conference in Hangzhou, as the company aims to reduce reliance on foreign hardware. According to a company press release, the hardware is designed to support the training requirements of future Qwen iterations, which the company expects to reach between 4 trillion and 10 trillion parameters.

The Zhenwu V900 architecture features 216GB of on-package memory, a notable increase over the 141GB capacity found in the NVIDIA H200. Industry analysts suggest this memory density likely relies on high-bandwidth memory solutions from ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, aligning with the firm’s current manufacturing roadmap.

Technical specifications for the accelerator include chip-to-chip interconnect speeds reaching 1.2 TB/s through the proprietary ICN Switch fabric. This interconnect infrastructure is engineered to support native FP8 and FP4 precision, which are increasingly vital for efficient large-scale model training.

The ICN Switch fabric serves as the backbone for the system, utilizing a high-radix design to minimize latency during collective communication operations. By reducing the overhead typically associated with data synchronization across thousands of nodes, the fabric allows for more efficient gradient updates during distributed training, effectively mitigating the communication bottlenecks that often plague massive GPU clusters.

Performance benchmarks provided by Alibaba indicate the V900 offers three times the compute power of the preceding M890 model. Each individual accelerator is rated for a peak performance of 1.8 PFLOPS at FP16 precision, which is a 300 percent increase in per-unit throughput compared to the 0.6 PFLOPS performance of the M890.

The ICN Switch fabric facilitates high-density clustering, allowing 1,000 V900 units to operate as a unified accelerator. At the maximum configuration, Alibaba claims a single cluster can scale to 500,000 chips, providing a collective memory pool of 108 petabytes for massive distributed training tasks.

Alibaba is also integrating its custom rack-scale solution to support these deployments, incorporating Yitian CPUs, Pangu network interface cards, and Zhenyue storage controllers. The Yitian CPUs function as the primary host processors, managing data orchestration and offloading non-tensor tasks from the V900 accelerators to ensure the GPU fabric remains saturated with compute-heavy operations, thereby optimizing the entire rack-scale system for high-throughput AI workloads.

The company announced a long-term infrastructure goal to deploy 20 gigawatts of total compute capacity by 2032. This objective requires an annual expansion of 2 to 3 gigawatts, a significant acceleration from the 5 gigawatt capacity estimated by Morgan Stanley for the end of 2026.

Researchers at Alibaba are simultaneously advancing Recursive Self-Improvement, or RSI, methodologies to optimize development cycles. By utilizing existing AI systems to assist in the coding and training of subsequent model generations, the firm seeks to achieve greater economies of scale in its research pipeline.

The focus on massive parameter counts for the upcoming Qwen 4.5 and Qwen 5.0 models aligns with the scaling laws identified in the 2025 AI Infrastructure Report by Goldman Sachs, which highlights that compute-to-parameter ratios must increase to maintain model convergence. These models will require the high-bandwidth memory and interconnect speeds provided by the V900 to maintain training efficiency at such extreme scales.

The infrastructure expansion will serve as a primary indicator of the firm’s ability to sustain its competitive position in the global AI research sector. Observers will monitor the integration of CXMT memory modules and the actualized performance of the ICN fabric in production environments throughout 2027.

Future milestones include the official launch of the V900 in the first quarter of 2027, which will provide the first real-world data on its training throughput. The success of these deployments will determine whether the company can maintain its current trajectory in developing increasingly complex, trillion-parameter large language models.
